The School of Sciences started its journey in 2000 with under graduate programs, with the objective of spreading scientific knowledge and understanding to the willing souls unable to be accommodated in regular university curriculum and provide opportunities to offer them degrees in different streams of Sciences. To make it possible this school has to accept the challenges to extend quality teaching in different basic science subjects in both of their theoretical and practical arenas. Starting with a completely Study Centre based model by using their quality human resources and laboratories with stringent monitoring and communication from University with the Centres and learners, different courses in Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Geography, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology had been introduced.
Within next few years the number of interested learners in science streams increased rapidly and to cope with the situation, University increased its number of study centres across the state of West Bengal in all directions with its quality check. Also University had taken an important qualitative decision to develop its own Regional Campuses with Science Departments and Laboratories which can actively participate and support the learners from far-flung areas of the state for different courses. First from this category was the Kalyani Regional Campus with Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology Departments with laboratory facilities which now caters students for different Bachelor and Post Graduate Programmes since 2012-13. The facilities are rapidly developing in this campus with infrastructural and systemic upliftment of the laboratories for different departments. The next in this categories is the Durgapur Regional Campus which came into function from 2018, where well organized and equipped Botany, Computer science and Mathematics Laboratory have started functioning and arranging the practical courses for students from 2019 with the well-equipped theoretical classrooms in function. The newest of them is the Jalpaiguri Campus which has just come into function from 2019 where development of laboratory facilities with classrooms are now under process.
Depending on the Study Centres network and these Regional Campuses the School of Sciences is now continuing Bachelor Degree Programme (BDP) in 6 subjects under its domain namely Botany, Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology and Post Graduate Degree Programme (PGP) in Geography, Mathematics and Zoology with several thousand students each year across the state and beyond. Within next couple of years other Science departments are going to introduce their PGP which will open up the possibilities for more learners.
The School of Sciences is under the process of adopting Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) curriculum for all its courses as recommended by UGC and set to convert all its under graduate courses into this format within 2020. Another significant move has taken by the University and the School to introduce Ph.D programme by 2019 as regular course as per UGC Regulations & directive. For this emphasis has been given to develop the newer laboratories within University infrastructures and collaborating with other laboratories or institutes as per requirement of different subjects. Also the upcoming new University Campus at Rajarhat will soon be a part of this qualitative and quantitative expansion and happenings of the School.
